The Eiffel Tower, an iconic wrought-iron lattice structure situated on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France, bears the name of its engineer, Gustave Eiffel. Erected from 1887 to 1889, the tower earned the designation of a monument historique in 1964 and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Soaring to a height of 330 meters (1,083 feet), equivalent to an 81-storey building, the Eiffel Tower stands as the tallest structure in Paris. Its square base measures 125 meters (410 feet) on each side.
During its construction, the Eiffel Tower claimed the title of the world’s tallest man-made structure, surpassing the Washington Monument. This distinction held for 41 years until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York City in 1930. Pioneering in height, it was the first structure globally to exceed both the 200-meter and 300-meter thresholds.
With the addition of a broadcasting aerial in 1957, the Eiffel Tower now surpasses the Chrysler Building by 5.2 meters (17 feet). Excluding transmitters, it ranks as the second tallest free-standing structure in France after the Millau Viaduct.
