Russia’s second most populous city, Saint Petersburg (formerly known as Petrograd from 1914 to 1924, Leningrad from 1924 to 1991, often referred to as Peter or Petersburg, St. Petersburg), is a federal city and the administrative center of the Northwestern Federal District . Founded on May 16 (27), 1703 by Tsar Peter I, from 1714 to 1728 and from 1732 to 1918 it served as the capital of the Russian state.
The city was named after St. Peter, the patron saint of the founding Tsar, although over time it became associated primarily with the name of Peter I himself. St. Petersburg is historically and culturally associated with the birth of the Russian Empire and Russia’s important role in European history.
It is located in the north-west of the country, on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and the mouth of the Neva River, borders the Leningrad region, and also has maritime borders with Finland and Estonia.
