Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city, is located on the straits linking Lake Mälaren to the Baltic Sea and includes 14 islands within the city area.

It has served as the country’s main economic center since the early 13th century. The city has a population of 984,748 (as of 2022), which is 9% of Sweden’s total population. The suburban area has 1,981,330 inhabitants (2022 data), making it the most densely populated area in Sweden. The total population of the Stockholm agglomeration is 2,440,027 (also data for 2022).

The capital is the main residence of the Swedish monarch, as well as the seat of the Swedish government and parliament. It is often referred to as the “capital of Scandinavia”.
