Officially known as the Republic of Korea, South Korea is situated in East Asia and encompasses the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It shares a border with North Korea along the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The Yellow Sea forms its western border, and the Sea of Japan defines its eastern border. South Korea asserts itself as the sole legitimate government for the entire peninsula and nearby islands. With a population of 51.96 million, approximately half reside in the Seoul Capital Area, ranking as the fourth most populous metropolitan area globally. Key cities include Incheon, Busan, and Daegu.

Human habitation on the Korean Peninsula dates back to the Lower Paleolithic period. The first kingdom appeared in Chinese records in the early 7th century BCE. After the consolidation of the Three Kingdoms into Silla and Balhae in the late 7th century, Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) and Joseon dynasty (1392–1897) ruled over Korea. The subsequent Korean Empire (1897–1910) faced annexation by the Empire of Japan in 1910. Japanese rule ended with Japan’s World War II surrender, leading to the division of Korea into a northern zone occupied by the Soviet Union and a southern zone occupied by the United States. Failed reunification negotiations resulted in the establishment of the Republic of Korea in August 1948 in the southern zone, while the northern zone became the communist Democratic People’s Republic of Korea the following month.
