Azerbaijan, officially known as the Republic of Azerbaijan, is a country that lies at the junction of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. This transcontinental nation is part of the South Caucasus and borders the Caspian Sea to the east, the Republic of Dagestan to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia and Turkey to the west, and Iran to the south. Its capital and largest city is Baku.
Historically, the territory of modern Azerbaijan was under the influence of Caucasian Albania and various Persian dynasties. Until the 19th century, this area was part of Qajar Iran. However, the Russian-Persian wars of the early 19th century led to the Qajar Empire losing its Caucasian possessions to the Russian Empire.
The borders between Russia and Iran were established by the Treaty of Gulistan in 1813 and the Treaty of Turkmenchay in 1828. The region north of the Araks River remained part of Iran until the 19th century, when it was conquered by Russia and became part of the Caucasian Viceroyalty.
