The Peter and Paul Fortress is a historical landmark located on Hare Island in the widest part of the Neva River in the historic center of St. Petersburg. It is the oldest architectural monument and a symbol of the city, serving as the historical core. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress was founded on May 16 (27), 1703 by Peter the Great to defend against the Swedes during the Northern War.
