The webcam shows the Alexandrinsky Theater and the Catherine Garden in the city of St. Petersburg.

The Alexandrinsky Theater, officially named the “National Drama Theater of Russia,” is one of the oldest and first dramatic theaters in Russia, founded on August 30 (September 10), 1756, by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. Initially named the “Russian Theater for Tragedies and Comedies,” it was renamed the Alexandrinsky Theater in 1832. The theater building was constructed in 1832 in the Empire style according to the design of the architect Carlo Rossi.

It is an architectural monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Alexandrinsky Theater is located on Ostrovsky Square in the Central District of St. Petersburg in the city’s historical center. The main facade of the theater faces Nevsky Avenue. In Ostrovsky Square, there is the Catherine Garden, in the center of which stands a 4.35-meter monument to Catherine II, consecrated in 1873.

The architectural ensemble of the square is complemented by the Anichkov Palace Garden, the buildings of the Russian National Library, the St. Petersburg City Credit Society, the Russian Musical Society, the Ministry of Public Education, the Russian National Library, and other historical buildings.
