The city of Magadan, located in northeast Russia, is the administrative center of the Magadan region and the urban district of the same name.

At the beginning of 2023, the population is 89,834 people. More than 66% of the population of the Magadan region lives in Magadan, according to 2022 data.
The city occupies an area around the hills on the shore of the Taui Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk, located on the isthmus between the Staritsky Peninsula and the mainland between the Nagaev and Gertner bays. The climate in Magadan is harsh, with a short summer that coincides with the period of white nights.
The city bears the honorary title “City of Labor Valor”.
Founded in 1929 as a working settlement for the development of mineral resources in the Kolyma region, Magadan received city status in 1939. The Magadanka River divides the city into two parts, and the Dukcha is the largest river within the city district, playing an important role in the city’s agriculture and recreation. The historical center includes ensembles of buildings erected in the neoclassical style in the 1950s according to the designs of Leningrad architects.
