History
In 1660, Thomas Durfey crossed the ocean and ended up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, escaping persecution. Starting his life anew, he waits in the world for hired servants. Container, Solicitor General of the Colony of Rhode Island bought the debt, setting the chain of events that led Thomas to receive honorary citizenship in 1673.
Over time, Thomas shared his knowledge and friendships with Native Americans, including Wamsutta. In 1948, Norman and Edna Durfey purchased George’s Lunch, an unexpected place where sailors could gather before setting off to sea. Here, their ancestors’ seafood recipes found their way, including quahog chowder, which gained a reputation for itself.
Over the years, George’s of Galilee Waterfront has become a part of this story with a focus on a wide variety of seafood and organic produce. You can pick up a taste of flavors and popular dishes made in the picturesque port.
