This large city and seaport in the south of the Russian Far East serves as the political, cultural, scientific, educational and economic center of the region. It has also been the administrative center of the Primorsky Territory, the Vladivostok City District and the Far Eastern Federal District since December 13, 2018.
Located on the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, Vladivostok includes 5 rural settlements and islands in the Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan.
This city is the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and one of the largest seaports in the Far Eastern basin. In addition, it is the main base of the Pacific Fleet.
Vladivostok is also the largest scientific and educational center in the Far Eastern region, including the Far Eastern Federal University and the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The city was founded in 1860 as a military post called “Vladivostok” and received city status in 1880.
