Koper is a city in southwestern Slovenia, located on the Istrian peninsula, near the coast of the Koper Bay of the Adriatic Sea. The city is famous for its music and folklore festivals, attracting many lovers of choral singing.

With this live webcam installed at Socerb Castle, you can enjoy the beauty of this area.

Koper is the largest city along a 30-kilometer stretch of Slovenian coastline. Situated close to the Italian border and the city of Trieste, it stands out from the other Slovenian coastal towns of Izola, Piran and Portorož, which stretch along the coast south of Koper.

The city of Koper dates back to an ancient Greek settlement known as Aegis. In Roman times it was called Caprice, from which the modern name is derived. In 568, Caprice became a refuge for the Romanesque population of Tergestum (Trieste) during the Lombard invasion. At one point, the city was called Justinople in honor of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian II.

In the 7th – 8th centuries, Koper experienced a difficult period when it was captured by the Franks, Lombards and Slavic tribes. A diocese was established here in the 8th century. In the 11th century, the city fell into conflict between Venice and the Holy Roman Empire, and for the support provided by the city, Emperor Conrad II awarded it some privileges.
