The Virgin Islands are an archipelago that is part of the northern Leeward Islands group. They are located on the border of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and consist of three parts: the British Virgin Islands, the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. A treaty between the United States and Denmark in 1916 resulted in the sale of the Danish Virgin Islands to the United States for $25 million in gold.
