The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federal state consisting of seven emirates, each of which is an absolute monarchy: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah, Umm al-Quwain, Fujairah and Sharjah.

The head of state is the President of the UAE, who is the Emir of the largest emirate, Abu Dhabi. The capital of the UAE is also the city of the same name, which is located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The key role of Abu Dhabi, the largest and richest emirate, is due to the fact that each emirate has the right to manage hydrocarbon reserves on its territory. This means that each emirate’s influence on the overall politics of the country depends on its oil reserves. For example, the UAE government is headed by the Emir of Dubai.

The state is located in southwest Asia, on the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and is washed by the waters of the Persian and Oman Gulfs. The UAE borders Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The population of the UAE in 2020 was 10,207,863, predominantly made up of workers from South and Southeast Asia. Sunni Muslims make up the main population.

The country has large oil reserves, but economic diversification has reduced dependence on the oil industry, which by 2009–2013 accounted for less than 40% of GDP.
