The Virgin Islands are an archipelago that is part of the northern Leeward Islands group. They are located on the border of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and consist of three parts: the British Virgin Islands, the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. This archipelago is separated from the Windward Islands by the Anegada Strait.
When Columbus discovered these islands, he named them Santa Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins (Las Vírgines for short) in honor of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. Initially, the islands were inhabited by the Carib and Arawak tribes. In 1555, King Charles V of Spain and Emperor of Germany captured the islands and the Caribs were destroyed.
In 1898, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, which belonged to the Spanish Crown, were transferred to the United States. This happened after the signing of the treaty that ended hostilities in the Spanish-American War.
A treaty between the United States and Denmark in 1916 resulted in the sale of the Danish Virgin Islands to the United States for $25 million in gold.
