The architectural complex of the square was formed gradually from the 19th to the 21st centuries.
The modern official name was established in 1964 in honor of the revolutionaries who fought to establish Soviet power in the Primorsky Territory in 1917-1922. Sometimes it is also called the Square of Fighters for Soviet Power – after the monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power in the Far East.
The square has an irregular quadrangular shape, approximately 300 meters long and 150 meters wide. From the west, north and east, the square is surrounded by historical and modern administrative, commercial and cultural buildings. From the south there is a view of the Golden Horn Bay.
