Bratislava travel guide

Bratislava is a city in Central Europe and is the capital of Slovakia. The city previously had different names such as Prešporok or Pressburg, Pozsony and Istropolis, depending on the historical context.

The official population of the city is about 437,000, but there are estimates of more than 660,000 residents. Bratislava is located in southwestern Slovakia at the foot of the Lesser Carpathians and stretches along both banks of the Danube and the left bank of the Morava River. It borders Austria and Hungary, making it the only national capital bordering two sovereign states.

In the past, Bratislava was the historical capital of the Kingdom of Hungary (from 1541 to 1684).

Today Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic center of Slovakia. The city is the home of the Slovak president, parliament and executive authorities. It also possesses several universities, museums, theatres, galleries and educational institutions.

Many large companies and financial institutions have their headquarters in Bratislava.
