Through this live webcam you can watch live the Castle Kostel (in Slovenian: Grad Kostel) – a fortress above the settlement of Kostel in south-eastern Slovenia. It rises on a steep hill above the Kolpa River, near the Croatian border.
Initially, there was a small fortification on this site, which was expanded between 1247 and 1325 by the Counts of Ortenburg, vassals of the Patriarchate of Aquileia.
First mentioned in 1336 as castrum Grafenwarth, the current name first appeared in 1449 as Kostel, derived from a corruption of the Latin castrum “fortress”. After the disappearance of the Counts of Ortenburg on April 28, 1418, the Counts of Celje inherited their possessions and turned the fortress into a powerful fortification, renaming it Grauenwart Castle. However, the surrounding settlement continued to be called the Kostel.
