In the Middle Ages, the city was contested by the Saracens and Lombards for its control, with the latter eventually winning. Cosenza fell to Roger Guiscard after a long siege. Frederick II rebuilt the so-called Swabian castle, in which his son Henry VII was kept; his son’s grave can be seen in the city cathedral.
