Oaxaca, or Oaxaca de Juarez, is the capital and largest city of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, with a population of about 255,000 people. The city is located in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains at an altitude of 1557 meters above sea level, roughly equidistant from the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, 460 km south of Mexico City. Oaxaca, along with the nearby archaeological site of Monte Alban, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. The city is home to many historical buildings, monuments, and architectural landmarks.

The climate in Oaxaca is tropical savanna, with dry and wet seasons, with most rainfall occurring in the summer months. The Santo Domingo church (Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman) in Baroque style is located in the historic center of Oaxaca. It was built over 200 years between the 16th and 18th centuries, and from 1608 to 1857, it housed a monastery. Since 1972, the Santo Domingo church has been home to the Oaxaca Cultural Center, which houses a rich collection of archaeological finds and artifacts, offering insights into the history of the state of Oaxaca.
