This is a live webcam view of Kamfers Dam, a 400-hectare private reservoir north of Kimberley, South Africa.

These were originally wetlands that were temporary and often experienced drought, depending on rainfall. Its water levels have risen in recent years due to the constant flow and treatment of water from the growing city of Kimberley.

The water area near the dam became the main breeding ground for small flamingos after the creation of an artificial island.

The dam and the surrounding 380-hectare wetland area were designated as a conservation area as part of the city’s spatial development project.

Since 2008, the issue of contamination and rezoning of nearby land for the possible construction of Northgate has become a point of contention, and conservationists have raised the alarm.
