As of 2022, its population reaches 791,000 people, making it the fifth most populous city in Germany and the only one awarded the status of “alpha world city” according to GaWC.
Located on the Taunus promontory along the Main River, it merges into a single metropolitan agglomeration with neighboring Offenbach am Main, which has a total population of more than 2.3 million people.
The city serves as the heart of the expanded Rhine-Main metropolitan area, which has a population of over 5.8 million people and is the second largest metropolitan area in Germany after the Rhine-Ruhr region, as well as the fourth largest metropolitan area by GDP in the European Union.
Frankfurt is home to the European Central Bank, one of the institutional cultural centers of the European Union, and its business district is approximately 90 km northwest of the EU’s geographical center at Gadheim, in Lower Franconia.
The city is named after the Franks, like France and Franconia. Frankfurt is the largest city in the Rhenish-Franconian speaking region.
