A HD live webcam broadcasts stunning views of the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone bridge with an arched structure over the Arno River in Florence, Italy.
It is the only bridge in all of Florence that survived the destruction that occurred during the Second World War.
It became famous for its shopping arcades, which were built along its long body – at one time such a practice was common. These rows were originally occupied by butchers, tanners and farmers; current tenants include jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers. Nearby bridges of the Ponte Vecchio include Ponte Santa Trinita and Ponte alle Grazie.
The bridge connects Via Por Santa Maria (Lungarno degli Acciaiuoli and Lungarno degli Arcibusieri) with Via de Guicciardini (Borgo San Jacopo and Via de Bardi).
The name “Ponte Vecchio” was given to this ancient bridge to distinguish it from the newer Ponte Nuovo (Ponte alla Carraia). From historical importance to significance in the city’s road infrastructure, the bridge has continuously played an important role in the life of the city, dating back to the period when it connected the ancient city with the Roman road Via Cassia Nova, built by order of Emperor Hadrian in 123 AD.
