With this live streaming webcam, you can observe the unique town of Coober Pedy in central South Australia. Coober Pedy is the center of the namesake local government area. As of the 2011 census, the town had an estimated population of 1,695 people. The nearest major cities are Port Augusta (500 kilometers to the south) and Alice Springs (600 kilometers to the north). Coober Pedy is known as the opal capital of the world, housing one of the richest opal deposits, accounting for about 30% of the world’s opal supply. Common opal was first discovered in Australia in 1849 during the gold rush, but noble opal was only found in Coober Pedy in 1915.
