As the capital of the department of Alto Paraná, it is 327 kilometers from the national capital, Asunción, and is connected to it via the PY02 road. If you are from Brazil, you pass through the Puente de la Amistad International Bridge over the Paraná River.
The city is a major center on the border, joining Foz de Iguazu in Brazil and Puerto Iguazu in Argentina to form a transnational metropolis with millions of inhabitants. Ciudad del Este is known for its important economic contribution, second only to Gran Asuncion.
The population of the city, including its suburbs, exceeds 300,000 people, making it one of the largest population centers in the country. The city attracts immigrants from countries including Lebanon, Bangladesh and Taiwan, and has its own regional diocese.
