Tashkent is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, administratively subordinate to the republic. It is the most populous city in Central Asia with more than 3 million inhabitants. It is the heart of the Tashkent urban agglomeration and plays a key role in the political, economic, cultural and scientific life of the country. Tashkent is also an important transport hub with developed aviation, railway and road infrastructure. The city is located in the northeast of Uzbekistan, close to the border with Kazakhstan.

Tashkent ranks third in the CIS in terms of population. It is also one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, and in 2009 there was an official celebration of its 2200th anniversary.

Tashkent is home to government agencies, embassies of other countries, as well as the headquarters of many large Uzbek commercial companies and public organizations.
