Saint Martin, also known as Sint Maarten, is an island in the Caribbean Sea located in the northern part of the Lesser Antilles chain of islands.
This island is the smallest inhabited island in the world, which is simultaneously part of two states. The northern part of the island is an overseas department of France called Saint-Martin, while the southern part is the self-governing state of Sint Maarten, under the rule of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and enjoying significant autonomy.
The administrative centers are the cities of Philipsburg and Marigot, respectively. Both parts of the island use a spoken language known as Saint Martin, an Eastern Caribbean Anglo-Creole language.
The official language of the Dutch part is Dutch, and English, Spanish and Papiamento are also widely used. On the French side of the island, the official language is French.
