Montenegro, located in the west of the Balkan Peninsula in South-Eastern Europe, is the smallest among the Slavic states and the countries of the Balkan Peninsula (with the exception of the partially recognized Kosovo), both in area and in population.
It borders the Adriatic Sea to the southwest and has land borders with Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, partially recognized Kosovo to the east, and Albania to the southeast.
Until full declaration of independence on June 3, 2006, Montenegro was part of the confederal State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, occupying 13.5% of its total territory. In 2010, she received official candidate status for EU membership. It has been a member of NATO since 2017. It uses the euro as its currency and is not a member of the Eurozone.
The capital and largest city is Podgorica, and the historical and cultural capital of the country is the city of Cetinje.
