Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1979, formerly known as Persia until 1935, is a country in Western Asia. Its capital is Tehran.
Iran borders on Iraq in the west, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey in the northwest, Turkmenistan in the north, and Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east. The country is washed from the north by the Caspian Sea, and from the south by the Persian and Oman Gulfs of the Indian Ocean.
Iran has played a key role in the East for many centuries, and its modern economy is the fourth largest in the world by purchasing power parity in the Islamic world and the second largest in Western Asia. Iran is also known for its technological development and has large reserves of oil and natural gas.
Iran is home to various ethnic groups, including Persians, Azerbaijanis, Kurds and Lurs, of which the Persians are the most significant.
