Honduras, officially known as the Republic of Honduras, is a country located in Central America, with Tegucigalpa as its capital (it was called Comayagua until 1880).

Historically, the country was known as Spanish Honduras to distinguish it from British Honduras, which later became Belize. Honduras borders Nicaragua in the southeast, El Salvador in the southwest, and Guatemala in the west, while being washed by the Caribbean Sea in the north and the Pacific Ocean (Gulf of Fonseca) in the south.

It is the second largest country in Central America by territory and population, second only to Nicaragua and Guatemala, respectively.

For many centuries, the territory of modern Honduras was inhabited by various Indian tribes, such as Lenca, Miskito-Matagalpa, Otomi-Mangue, Maya, and Hicake (belonging to the Chibcha language group), who lived according to the principle of a primitive communal structure. Their main activities were farming, hunting, and fishing.
