Brickell Key is a man-made island located near Brickell in Miami, Florida. This area, also known as Cloughton Island, is located east of central Miami and at the mouth of the Miami River.
In 1896, Henry Flagler dug a 2.7-meter-deep channel at the mouth of the Miami River, resulting in the formation of two artificial islands.
In 1943, Edward N. Claughton Sr. purchased Brickell Key and other surrounding lands with the intention of combining them into one triangular tract of 180,000 m2. In the late 1970s, Swire Properties purchased a significant portion of the island from the Cloughton family.
By now, in 2020, the population of Brickell Key was 20,558 people.
