Watch a live webcam broadcast from Barrea, a commune in the province of L’Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy.
This city is located on the shores of Lago di Barrea, a lake that was formed after World War II as a result of the construction of a dam on the Sangro River.
Barrea has ancient origins, linked to the pre-Roman Samnite population, who strengthened their ties to the site. Many traces of this period survive along the shores of the lake or at the nearby archaeological site of Alfedena. The first mention of Barrea dates back to 996, when a document first mentions the ancient name of Barrea, Vallis Regia.
The same document indicates that during the dark feudal times in Italy, Barrea was given to the Duke of Spoleto, a period characterized by anarchy and barbarian raids.
