This park is located in the highest valley east of the Mississippi River and includes the second largest inland wetland area in the United States. This valley was also where the first commercial ski resort in West Virginia was built.
In 1950-1951, members of the Washington Ski Club, based on reports from pilots, identified the slopes of Cabin Mountain in the Canaan Valley as a suitable location for the development of skiing. Thanks to the protection from the sun, snow on this side of the mountain often remains until April and even later.
