Ruins of the Ludza Medieval Castle

In 1399, the German Crusaders built a mighty castle, between the small and large Ludza lakes. The castle protected the eastern borders of the Livonian Order. The castle was built of stone, had 3 floors, 6 towers, 3 gates and 2 forburgs.The castle was built of gray stone and red brick.

From the hill on which the castle is located, there was a stunning view of the whole city.

Many mysterious legends are connected with the castle and its inhabitants. They say even an enchanted princess lived here.

Only the ruins of the castle have survived to this day, we can only imagine what this powerful structure looked like.
