Tijuana is the largest city in the state of Baja California and the westernmost in all of Latin America. Located 170 km from the state capital of Mexicali and just an hour’s drive from the port city of Ensenada, Tijuana also serves as the administrative center of the municipality of the same name.
The city shares a state border with its American sister city, San Diego, and the combined population of these two cities exceeds 5 million people.
Before the arrival of the Spaniards to these lands, there were settlements of the Cumiai tribes, related to other tribes living on the California Peninsula.
This is supported by references in the chronicles of missionaries who crossed the region on their way north. There are also linguistic elements that indicate that the word “Tijuana” is of Indian origin. However, documents mentioning the baptism of a local resident of the settlement “de la ranchería de tía Juana” in Mission San Diego in 1809 suggest that perhaps the parish pastor was simply Spanishizing a local word that was not fully understood.
