A live webcam shows the Central Square of Munich in Germany.

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich, named after the Virgin Mary, and one of the main attractions of the capital of Bavaria in Germany. The square was formed immediately after the founding of the city in 1158 and historically has been the very center of Munich. In the past, knightly battles and public executions took place on the central square of Munich. The square was renamed in honor of the Virgin Mary in 1854, before which it was known as the Market Square.

From ancient times to the present day, a market is regularly organized on Marienplatz, where one can purchase fish, eggs, farm products, wine, Bavarian beer, and more. The pedestrian shopping street Kaufingerstrasse, the oldest street in Munich and a tourist attraction, starts from the square. Here, visitors can see historic 19th-century buildings of Munich merchants and visit shops and boutiques of German and international brands. Marienplatz is a place where the most interesting attractions of the Bavarian capital are concentrated, including the Old Town Hall and the New Town Hall. In the center of the square stands the Marian Column, erected in 1638, topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Bavaria.

The oldest parish church in Munich, St. Peter’s Church, is located here. Its bell tower, at a height of 56 meters, houses an observation deck with a breathtaking view of the historic city center. Nearby is the Cathedral of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), the tallest church in Munich. Marienplatz is the main venue for city public events and celebrations. For example, New Year’s Eve is celebrated here, and an annual Christmas market is held.
