Located south of Miami Beach and east of Miami, Key Biscayne is connected to Miami by a road built in 1947. Its low altitude and direct access to the Atlantic Ocean make it one of the first areas to evacuate when a hurricane threatens.
According to the USA Census Bureau, the area of the city is 3.6 km², of which 3.4 km² is land and 0.26 km² (8.63%) is water.
Key Biscayne is bordered to the north by Miami-Dade County Crandon Park, to the south by Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Biscayne Bay.
At the beginning of the XX century the island was used as a large coconut plantation. In 1947, the Rickenbacker road was opened, which connected the island with Key Biscayne and Miami, and after that active development of the area began. In 1991, it was incorporated into Miami-Dade County as a municipality.
From 1984 to 2018, Key Biscayne hosted a major tennis tournament, the Miami Open, on the courts of the local Tennis Center at Crandon Park.
