Thailand, officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, formerly called Siam until 1939 and during the periods 1945–1949, is a country in Southeast Asia. It is located in the southwestern part of the Indochina Peninsula and in the north of the Malacca Peninsula.
The word “tai” means “freedom” and “land” means “country”. Introduced in 1939, the English version of the name “Thailand” translates as “land of the Thais”, while the Thai version sounds like Prathet Thai or Muang Thai.
This country name has served as an eponym for terms such as Thai cat, Siamese cat, Siamese twins, Muay Thai and Thai massage.
