The Maldives is an island nation located in South Asia, on a group of atolls south of the Hindustan Peninsula, at the intersection of the Arabian and Laccadive Seas of the Indian Ocean. It is the world’s largest “coral” state and the smallest state in Asia. The capital is the city of Male.

The population is 402,071, including 338,434 citizens and 63,637 non-citizens (as of the census conducted on September 20, 2014). The state religion is Islam.

The first settlers in the Maldives left no archaeological artifacts. Their homes were likely made of wood, palm fronds, and other materials that decomposed quickly in the warm, humid tropical climate. The leaders of the ancient Maldivians did not live in stone palaces or castles, and their religion did not require the construction of large temples or majestic structures.
