The Republic of Cyprus, an island state in the eastern Mediterranean Sea in the Middle East, joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.

It is a multi-ethnic state with a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, religious and national groups.

Officially, the territory of the Republic of Cyprus comprises 97.3% of the island’s area, including the adjacent islands of Agios Yeorgios, Geronisos, Glyukiotissa, Kila, Kiedes, Kordylia and Mazaki, with the exception of 2.7%, which is occupied by the British military bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

After the events of 1974, the island was divided into four parts: 57.9% of the territory is controlled by the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, 36% by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, 3.4% by the UN and 2.7% by the British Armed Forces.

Cyprus is a member of the European Union, Council of Europe, OSCE and WTO.
