Belarus, officially known as the Republic of Belarus, is a country situated in Eastern Europe. As of January 1, 2023, its population stands at 9,200,617 people, covering a territory of 207.6 thousand km². In global rankings, Belarus holds the 97th position in terms of population and the 84th position in terms of territory.
The capital and largest city of the nation is Minsk, where the official languages are Belarusian and Russian. Belarus operates as a unitary presidential republic. Alexander Lukashenko assumed the presidency on July 20, 1994, marking the inaugural presidential elections in the country. Subsequently, he secured victories in the elections held in 2001, 2006, 2010, 2015, and 2020.
Belarus is geographically divided into six regions, with the city of Minsk serving as a separate administrative-territorial unit with the special status of a city of republican subordination. The republic shares its borders, with Lithuania to the northwest, Poland to the west, Latvia to the north, Russia to the east and northeast, and Ukraine to the south.
