The city is located 50 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico on the coastal plain.
Houston was founded on August 30, 1836 and incorporated into the Republic of Texas on June 5, 1837. The city was named after Samuel Houston, commander-in-chief of the Texas Army during the Texas Revolution and president of the Republic of Texas. The development of the port and railways in the 19th century, as well as the beginning of oil production and the development of the oil industry in the 20th century, led to rapid population growth. In the 1960s, the number of residents exceeded one million, and in the 2000s – two million.
