Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, the Peter and Paul Fortress stands as the original citadel of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Architect Domenico Trezzini oversaw its construction from 1706 to 1740, creating a star fortress.

From the early 1700s to the 1920s, the fortress played a dual role as a prison for political criminals. Since 1924, it has functioned as a museum, offering insights into its historical significance.

Situated on Hare Island along the north bank of the Neva River, the fortress became operational on May 16, 1703. Over time, starting around 1720, it transitioned into a garrison for the city and concurrently served as a prison for high-ranking and political detainees.
