Watch this live webcam from the community of Whakatu, located in the Hastings District and Hawke’s Bay region of the North Island of New Zealand. It lies just 8 km (5.0 mi) northeast of Hastings city centre.
Whakatu is surrounded by a large industrial area, bordered by a bend in the River Clive. The closure of the Whakatu freezer plants in 1986 resulted in the loss of 2,000 permanent and seasonal jobs in the region. State Highway 2 and the Palmerston North Gisborne railway line pass through Whakatu.
Richard Tucker (1856–1922) was a prominent resident of Whakatu; he owned the largest wool cleaning factory in the Hawke’s Bay region.
