Hirosaki is a city located in the Aomori Prefecture in the Tohoku region in the north of Honshu Island, with an area of 524.1 km² and a population of approximately 178,500 people. The city was founded on April 1, 1889, and is currently the largest producer of apples in Japan. It has a humid continental climate with a short warm summer and a long cold winter with heavy snowfall. The average temperature in July is +23°C, while in the coldest month, January, it is -3°C.
Near Hirosaki is the active volcano Mount Iwaki, standing at 1625 meters, being the highest point in the Aomori Prefecture. The main crater of the volcano has a diameter of about 2 km, containing a solidified lava dome. Smaller craters are located around the main crater. Mount Iwaki is a revered site for Shintoists. At its summit is the Iwakiyama Shrine (岩木山神社). Residents of the region pray for a good harvest for all of Japan at the mountain’s summit.
