Rio Grande is situated on the eastern side of the Northern Coastal Valley next to Las Piedras, Naguabo, and Ceiba, towards the east with Loiza and Canovanas, and west of Luquillo. Eight districts including Rio Grande Pueblo which is its seat/center.
It is among the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Most areas of El Yunque National Forest including its peak are located within this municipality. The land was granted to Desiderio Escobar and Quilimako Escobar by Governor Miguel Lopez for them to establish the Rio Grande on July 16th, 1840.
Its name comes from a place where Río Grande meets Río Espiritu Santo. In 1894 there were two sugar cane plantations and 256 farms producing lesser fruits in that vicinity.
