Located on the coast of the Gulf of Lion in the Mediterranean Sea in the southeastern part of France in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Marseille is a major city. It is the largest seaport in the country and the entire Mediterranean Sea. Marseille has a Mediterranean climate, similar to Sochi as it is located at the same latitude.
The city was founded in 600 BC by the Phocaeans (Greeks from Asia Minor) who named it “Massalia.” Marseille has preserved a large number of ancient architectural monuments and landmarks to this day.
