Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova is an important national holiday dedicated to the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the actual separation from the USSR. It has the status of an official public holiday, and for citizens it is a day off.

On August 27, 1991, the Great National Assembly met in the Moldavian SSR, during which the parliament made a historic decision to ratify the Declaration of Independence.

On this day, the President of Moldova addresses the nation with a congratulatory speech. Festive celebrations are organized not only in the capital Chisinau, but also in various cities of the country.

In rural areas, celebrations often include fairs and sales as well as concerts, and in many urban centers the installation of rides and game stalls for public entertainment. In Chisinau, the main celebrations take place on the Square of the Great National Assembly.

During these holidays, cultural centers demonstrate traditional folk customs.

The climax of Independence Day is marked by a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the night sky.
