Chobe National Park is the third largest in Botswana and the country’s oldest national park, covering 10,566 km². Though it was established in 1967, the first game reserve here was formed much earlier in 1931. This is located to the northeast of Botswana within the Kwando River Basin which after Lnyanti Swamps is called Chobe.

This sanctuary has one of the most numerous wildlife populations not only on the African continent but also on a worldwide scale. It hosts over 400 bird species, one of the largest populations of African elephants (estimated to be over 50,000), and many other large mammals.

Nowadays this park can be split into four major ecosystems:

The Serondela Zone of riparian woodland; is the portion of riverine forest along the edges of Chobe River that runs through the north-eastern part of its territory.

The Savuti Channel area lies on the west side of Chobe.

The second wetland system in northern regions – the Linyanti Swamps.

There is nearly no visitor to an area that lies between Linyanti and Savuti swamps; it forms a hinterland characterized by plains covered with forests.

In 2011, it also joined the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area.
