Moscow, the capital of Russia and a city of federal significance, is also the administrative center of the Central Federal District and the Moscow Region, although it is not part of the latter. This metropolis is the most populous city in Russia and one of the most populated in the world, with a population of 13,104,177 people (as of 2023). Moscow also ranks 22nd in the world in terms of population. It is the center of the Moscow urban agglomeration and the largest city in Europe by area.
Archaeological finds indicate the presence of a settlement in the site of the future Kremlin back in the 11th century. The history of Moscow goes back at least 876 years: the first written mention of the city dates back to 1147. Moscow was the historical capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Russian Kingdom, as well as the Russian Empire (in 1728-1732), Soviet Russia and the USSR. It also bears the title of hero city. Federal government bodies of the Russian Federation (with the exception of the Constitutional Court), as well as embassies of foreign states, the headquarters of most of the largest Russian commercial organizations and public associations are located in Moscow.
