Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a state in Southeastern Europe, in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a population of about 3,453,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 51.2 thousand square kilometers. It borders Croatia to the north, west and south, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the southeast. In addition, the country has access to the Adriatic Sea in the southwest with about 20 kilometers of coastline. The official languages are Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian.
The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the city of Sarajevo.
The country is a parliamentary republic consisting of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska and the Brcko district. It has been a member of the United Nations since 1992 and applied to join the European Union in February 2016.
In 2010, Bosnia and Herzegovina received an action plan for joining NATO. In addition, on December 15, 2022, the country was granted the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union.
In the past, Bosnia and Herzegovina was one of the poorest republics of Yugoslavia, and now it remains one of the poorest countries in Europe with high unemployment. The main partners in foreign trade are the EU countries, and the monetary unit is the convertible mark.
